Minority Diabetes Prevention Program

Life in 24 is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). It is proven to help people with prediabetes prevent or delay development of type 2 diabetes.

When you join a Life in 24 group, you will work with other participants and a trained lifestyle coach to learn the skills you need to make lasting changes. These changes include losing 5 to 7 percent of your starting weight by being more physically active, eating mindfully, and managing stress. Do not be discouraged by the idea of losing weight – for a person weighing 200 pounds,
5 to 7 percent weight loss is only 10 to 14 pounds!

Being a part of a group provides support from other people who are facing similar challenges and trying to make the same changes you are.
Together, you can celebrate successes and find ways to overcome obstacles.

Besides gaining valuable skills and knowledge, you will also receive incentives along the way! Our programs offer a variety of prizes and tools, including, but not limited to, fitness trackers, digital food scales, grocery store gift cards, gym memberships or equipment, and George Foreman Grills.

We also like to have fun in class! Many of our past groups have done activities, such as grocery store tours, cooking demonstrations, group fitness classes (Zumba, yoga, water aerobics, belly dancing – you name it!), and meal prep workshops. Your lifestyle coach will work to make your experience worthwhile, fun, interactive, and rewarding.

Life in 24 groups meet weekly for the first 16 weeks of the program, then once or twice a month for 6-8 months for continued support. Each class in only an hour long and you will meet with your group approximately 24 times over the course of the one year, for a total of 24 hours.

The cost for the entire program is $25. However, we provide equitable access to the program by offering scholarships and assistance with childcare and transportation.

Life in 24 can help people with prediabetes cut their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half. Since 2016, we have completed 26 programs, enrolled 290 participants, and screened over 1,100 people for prediabetes and diabetes. We have an average retention rate of 82% and our classes have lost a total weight of over 1,250 pounds; and that number increases every week!
